Lift Chair Program

The Hereditary Cancer Foundation’s Lift Chair Program is here to make recovery easier for individuals facing the challenges of hereditary cancer syndromes or a cancer diagnosis. Whether you're recovering from surgery related to cancer treatment or prevention, our lift chair program offers physical support and comfort during one of life’s most pivotal moments.

What is the Lift Chair Program?

About the Program

Our program provides lift chairs designed specifically to assist in mobility and recovery. These chairs enable users to move from a fully reclined position to standing with minimal effort, reducing bodily strain and expediting the recovery process.

The program started in 2017 when a kindhearted donation inspired a movement. One lift chair was gifted to a preventative surgery patient, who later passed it along to help another individual in need. What began as a single act of generosity has grown into a full-scale community program with 35 lift chairs available today.

Thanks to frequent referrals from surgeons, local nonprofits, and community members we have served hundreds of patients with this program.

Designed for Your Recovery

Our lift chairs are here to help individuals who are high-risk or recovering. Here’s how they benefit you:

  • Facilitate movement while promoting healing.
  • Provide additional comfort after surgery.
  • Help individuals regain independence during a critical phase of recovery.

The program is ideal for those recovering from procedures like a prophylactic mastectomy, cancer-related surgery, or other medical interventions related to hereditary cancer syndromes.

Important Details Before You Apply

  • Do you think a lift chair could help with your recovery? Here’s what you need to know before applying:

  • Our lift chairs accommodate a weight limit of up to 280 lbs.
  • If you have pets, a pet-friendly chair may be required. Similarly, individuals with pet allergies will be carefully matched with pet-free chairs for their safety and comfort.
  • Unfortunately, chairs will not be loaned to smokers or smoking households.
  • To aid our chair volunteers, applicants with access to transportation to pick up the chair and bring it to their home are appreciated. If transportation is a barrier, once per month delivery may be available.

The next chair pick-up day: Saturday, June 14th from 10AM-12PM.

(You will need to self-transport the chair from the Ponca Hills, Omaha storage unit to your home.)

Chair delivery and return pick-ups are available one day per month. Please email if you have any questions.

  • Monthly chair delivery and pick-up days will be announced by the 25th of the previous month. (ie. January delivery day will be posted by December 25th)
  • Chairs will only be delivered within a 20-mile radius of Omaha
  • Recipients will be given a delivery window the day before the delivery via email or text message
  • For the safety of our volunteers, chairs will be delivered to driveways or ground level garages only.
  • Driveway delivery must allow for an enclosed trailer to back into the space

How to Apply

Applying is easy! Please complete the short application form linked below. The form will ask questions such as:

  • Do you have pets? If so, what kind?
  • Are you a smoker?
  • What is your expected recovery time?
  • Do you have transportation to pick up the chair?

Note that our program is based on referrals and availability. Chairs are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis to ensure as many people as possible can benefit.
